Becoming Ordinary

Zen practice for everyday life — realizing the heart of awakening in the world as it is.

About

The extraordinary is found in the ordinary

Roshi David Jōkai Blackwell

Becoming Ordinary grew from two decades of residential training at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center, and from a simple recognition: the deepest expression of practice is how we meet our everyday lives — at work, in our relationships, and navigating an uncertain world.

Roshi David is a Zen teacher in the White Plum Asanga lineage. He received Dharma Transmission and the lineage name Tenryū Jōkai (天龍浄海) from Charles Tenshin Fletcher Roshi in 2014, and Inka — final seal of approval and independence — in 2022.

Originally from Wales, David moved to Southern California in 2000 to train full time. His teaching is grounded in traditional Zen forms and woven into the texture of ordinary life. He emphasizes the direct experience of awakening using contemporary language and time-honored methods.

Koan Study — Four meetings per month of 25 minutes each. Working with traditional koans as a vehicle for direct inquiry into the nature of mind and experience. Suitable for students who have established a sitting practice and are ready to engage formal koan work.

Text Study — Four meetings per month of 50 minutes each. Close reading and discussion of classical Zen texts and primary sources, with attention to how the teachings speak to contemporary practice and everyday life.

One-time meetings are also available, for either a 25-minute or 50-minute session.
